WHY DOES THE INVERTER TURN ITSELF OFF?

If the inverter’s audible alarm sounds and a fault LED illuminates, this indicates a fault or error and the inverter may turn off. This is most commonly caused by an appliance drawing too much power (overloading), low battery voltage, or voltage drop due to undersized cables or poor connections (refer to ‘Understanding your Inverter’ tables, page 7).

THE INVERTER WILL NOT RUN MY APPLIANCE EVEN THOUGH THE APPLIANCE DRAWS LESS POWER (WATTS) THAN THE SIZE OF THE INVERTER?

Electrical appliances can be grouped by the way they draw current: resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads. Some appliances may draw a combination of these.

Resistive Loads
Examples include incandescent lights (wire filament). These appliances draw constant power—e.g., a 100 W light will draw approximately 100 W at all times. These are the easiest loads for an inverter to run.

Inductive Loads
These include appliances with electric motors, such as fridges, air compressors, transformers/chargers, pumps, power tools, and fluorescent lights. They require a large surge of power to start (up to 10 times their running power). For example, an 80 W fridge may need a 600–1000 W inverter to start.

Capacitive Loads
Many TVs and electronic appliances fall into this category. They require a surge current to initially charge their internal capacitors, especially if unused for a few days. Resetting the inverter a few times may help.

Some appliances—such as large refrigerators, air conditioners, and pump-driven systems—have extremely high start-up currents and are not recommended for use with an inverter. These should be powered by an engine-driven generator.

WHY DOES IT DAMAGE THE INVERTER IF THE BATTERY LEADS ARE REVERSE-CONNECTED?

The inverter uses sophisticated electronics to convert DC battery power to AC mains power. If connected with reverse polarity, a large current can flow, blowing the protection fuse and potentially damaging internal components. Always check battery polarity carefully before connecting.

HOW DO I CHECK OR CHANGE THE FUSES?

Pro-Wave inverters contain internal fuses, which should only be checked or replaced by a qualified electrical appliance repairer.
Important: The DC supply must be disconnected before any repair, then switch the inverter ON to discharge the internal capacitors.

WHY DOES THE FAN ONLY OPERATE SOMETIMES?

Pro-Wave inverters use a temperature-controlled automatic cooling fan that activates only when needed. This allows the unit to operate very quietly most of the time.

CAN I RUN LAPTOP COMPUTERS AND OTHER SENSITIVE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES?

Yes. Pro-Wave’s pure sine wave output is suitable for medical equipment and other sensitive electronics. It allows laptops, gaming consoles, TVs, and fluorescent lights to operate without interference or static.
