HOW DO I KNOW IF THE BATTERY IS CHARGED?

The charger’s FULL LED will illuminate (solid). Alternatively, use a Battery Hydrometer (Part No. BH100). A reading of 1.250 or more in each cell indicates a fully charged battery.

I HAVE CONNECTED THE CHARGER PROPERLY BUT THE BULK LED DOES NOT COME ON.

In some cases, batteries can be flattened to the point where they have very little or no voltage. This can happen if a small amount of power is used continuously over a long period, for example if a map reading light is left on for a week or more. Projecta 6 Stage chargers are designed to charge from as little as 3.0 Volts.

If the battery voltage is below 3.0 Volts, use a pair of booster cables to connect between two batteries so the flat battery receives more than 3.0 Volts. The charger can then begin charging the battery, after which the booster cables can be removed.

CAN I USE THE CHARGER AS A POWER SUPPLY?

No. Projecta 6 Stage chargers only supply power to the battery clips when they are correctly connected to a battery. This prevents sparks during connection and eliminates the risk of incorrect connection. As a result of this safety feature, the charger cannot be used as a ‘Power Supply’.

HOW CAN I TELL WHAT STAGE THE BATTERY CHARGER IS IN?

Coloured LEDs indicate the different charging stages. Refer to the “LED Charge Indicators” section of this booklet for details.

WHY DOES CALCIUM MODE TAKE SO LONG TO CHARGE?

Calcium batteries require an additional charging stage called ‘Equalisation’, where a constant current is fed into the battery until 16 Volts is reached. This helps rejuvenate the battery cells. This stage can take up to 12 hours to complete.

WHY DO I NEED A SPECIAL CALCIUM MODE?

Calcium batteries use different chemistry compared to standard lead acid batteries, so they require a specific charging algorithm. They can also be affected when deeply discharged or heavily used. A Calcium charger is needed to fully restore the battery and maximise its performance and lifespan.

WHAT IS A CALCIUM BATTERY?

Calcium batteries are lead acid batteries with calcium added to the lead plates, either to one plate (Calcium Hybrid) or both plates (Calcium–Calcium).

Benefits include:
i. Lower internal resistance, providing a small increase in CCA performance.
ii. Better resistance to higher engine bay temperatures.
iii. Very low self-discharge rate, offering a shelf life typically four times longer than a standard Lead–Lead battery.
